Uploading the right photo makes all the difference between a canvas you'll treasure forever and one that disappoints. Here's everything you need to know — from resolution requirements to lighting tips, phone vs camera advice, and common mistakes to avoid.

For a sharp, professional-looking canvas print, we recommend:

  • 8×12 inch (20×30cm): Minimum 1200×1800 pixels (2MP). Most smartphone photos taken after 2018 will be fine.
  • 12×16 inch (30×40cm): Minimum 1800×2400 pixels (4MP). Modern phone cameras produce 12MP+ — well above this threshold.
  • 16×20 inch (40×50cm): Minimum 2400×3000 pixels (7MP). This is where photos from older phones or heavy crops may start to show softness.
  • 24×36 inch (60×90cm): Minimum 3600×5400 pixels (19MP). For best results at this size, use a DSLR or mirrorless camera, or a recent flagship phone (iPhone 14 Pro+, Samsung S23+, etc.)

Can I use iPhone photos? Yes, absolutely — and they'll look great on most sizes up to 16×20 inch. Modern iPhones (12 and newer) shoot at 12MP or higher, which is plenty for canvas. The key is good lighting, not megapixels.

Lighting & Composition: 5 Tips for a Beautiful Canvas

  1. Use natural light whenever possible. Photos taken near a window on a cloudy-bright day produce soft, even lighting with no harsh shadows. Avoid direct sunlight, which creates blown-out highlights and deep shadows.
  2. Avoid flash photography. Phone and camera flashes create harsh, unflattering light and often cause red-eye or overexposed faces.
  3. Get closer to your subject. The most common mistake is being too far away. Fill the frame — for portraits, aim for the person or pet to occupy about 60-70% of the image.
  4. Check the background. A cluttered background distracts from your subject. Simple, clean backgrounds (a plain wall, greenery, the sky) work best for canvas.
  5. Keep the camera steady. Blurry photos can't be fixed. Brace your phone against a stable surface or use a tripod for group shots.

Phone Camera vs Professional Camera — What Works?

The short answer: both work well, as long as your photo meets the resolution guidelines above. Here's the honest comparison:

  • Smartphone (iPhone 12+ / Samsung S21+ / Google Pixel 6+): Excellent for prints up to 16×20 inch. Modern computational photography handles exposure and colour beautifully. Most of our customer canvases are made from phone photos and look stunning.
  • DSLR / Mirrorless Camera: Better for large prints (24×36 inch and above) because the sensor captures more detail in highlights and shadows. Also better if you plan to crop heavily.
  • Old phone (pre-2018) or budget phone: May work for 8×12 inch prints. Test with a close-up, well-lit photo — avoid zooming or cropping.

Cropping & Editing: What We Can (and Can't) Do

We lightly edit every photo to optimise brightness, contrast, and colour for canvas printing. We can also:

  • Remove minor blemishes or dust spots
